Self Improvement & Motivate Social

Friday

Fast forward yourself to the end of December and as the year closes, how are you feeling about your achievements during this past year? Really get in touch with your feelings, live them, breathe them and don’t let them pass by. Are you feeling any disappointment, regret or frustration for the things you haven’t done or achieved? Do you find yourself thinking, “This past year has flown by and what have I done”, “There is so much more that I wanted to do” or “Why haven’t I done the things that I’d said I’d do”.

Your mind is the single most effective and essential tool to craft and program your thoughts, aspirations and goals. Consequently, when your goals are properly planned out, it will be very much easier to shape and design the life you want and ultimately the success you strive to attain. Yet, many people still do not even use their minds to set goals, let along take effective actions to achieve their goals.

1. Never value your journey as a success.

People who consider the achievement of the ultimate goal as the only possible way to achieve success are perfect prospects to never be good leaders. It is a perfect way to fail as a leader. Leaders, naturally, are driven and desire to accomplish the realization of a vision. That is one of the things that characterize them. But they also are set apart because they see each step in the way to realization as a small success. If you never value your journey as a success, then you’ll end up being a very unhappy person, since you’ll have to wait a long time before you can know what ’success’ feels like.

How To Overcome Defeat

You have goals, you want to reach them and you do all you can - or so you think - to achieve them, but the chances are that you meet defeat along the way because this is the nature of life. Do you or have you given up? Have you thought that your goal was unrealistic or that you are just not good enough? Did you think; “Well I gave it my best shot, it did not work, so now I will go back to my “normal” life.” OR “Who am I to think such grandiose thoughts?”

I discovered Tony Buzan’s ‘Use Your Head’ book while looking in a second hand bookshop over two decades ago. It marked the start of my fascination with the concepts and potential of mind maps. I was intrigued enough by the material in the book to try out mind mapping while I was teaching high school science. This article summarizes the lessons learned from the classroom experience.

No Such Thing As A List

“I have so many things I have to get done! I don’t know where to start. Is there some systemized way of prioritizing what I want and need to get done?”

I get questions like this all the time when I coach and the answer is never what the client wants to hear.

If you’ve read many of my articles you will know that I firmly believe that I can’t possibly know what would work for you. It isn’t likely I’m going to give you advice or some pat solution to this answer and usually if the “list” is long the client wants a quick fix. Of course you know what I think of quick fixes.

“Like…what’s that on your face?” the young girl blurted out to another young girl in the mall. Being less than ten feet away, I couldn’t help but see the zit was bigger than the nose on a clown in the Fourth of July parade. Could she have been more rude? I don’t think so. How could she say that in front of the girls friends and several strangers?

We see poor manners everywhere…the mall, theatre, restaurants, airports…anywhere people gather. A very good friend, Sybil Atwood, recently shared her concern with what she phrased, “the end of civility” in our society. Once again, Sybil has inspired me to dig a little deeper.

The Day I Found the Lump
By Alex Blackwell

Part Three in the “Coming Into Your Own” Series

Sometimes in life we are given circumstances and conditions that are unwelcome and unfair. Going through particularly hard times can make us bitter and can cause us to feel victimized. However, there are no accidents without value. What this means is no matter what happens to us, we can find value in the event.

There’s no question it is difficult to find the meaning or value in an uncomfortable situation as you are encountering it, but when you step back and look at the outcome it produces, you can almost always find some measure of value.

While it’s true there can many factors that contribute to your unhappiness at work (a supervisor who does not listen, subordinates who try to undermine your decisions as well as ineffective meetings) always remember the real solution to change your current situation and to find happiness at work is to change your behavior and attitude. You must do this before you will begin to see any real change with your career.
