Our habitual tendencies shape and mold our current existence; they also create the opportunities for success or failure. Being aware of their existence and altering them to our desired results is thereby crucial if we want to attain the aspirations we desire.
Habits can be classified as anything we do on a consistent basis in which we are in essence addicted to doing that certain thing. Addiction might be a rough word to use, but a simple test would be to see how you would feel not doing what you consistently do. It would feel uncomfortable right? Well that action is a habit and you are addicted to the emotions it creates.
Habits are not necessarily actions, they can also be emotions. For example, depression can be classified as a habitual tendency. It is emotion a person dives into on a regular basis. It is also a certain thought or thoughts a person thinks on a regular basis which induces the state of depression. You have to be thinking or focusing on something negative to be depressed, amongst many other physiological patterns. For those of you who are currently depressed or have been in the past, I am sure you can relate truthfully, that it is, your regular focus, or internal speech, that results in the emotions you feel.
Habits can also differentiate a person’s success in a certain area. The strange thing is that many people are not aware of their habits, many people are not aware of what they do, think or visualize in their minds on a continuos basis. That’s why it is a habit. Because it’s so comfortable that it become second nature to actually do it. As the great Stephen piece puts it “what we do habitually, we become permanently”. I am not suggesting eradicating all your habits, because some actually serve you, and I am sure you know which ones those are. I am talking about destroying those bad habits which really hold you back from the life you want to live. Habits such as procrastination or negative thinking, stop you from moving forward in life and to a degree affect your daily behaviour. Also you might want to implement some new empowering habits which you might think will assist you in achieving the goals that you desire. Habits such as immediate action, or proactive-ness, can really accelerate your journey to excellence. So I am going to give you some quick set of skills which you can apply immediately to evaluate and transform your habits.
Step 1: One must firstly evaluate their habits. Habits which assist you and habits that hold you back. Write down all the habits you can think of then write down how they affect your daily life. Go into great detail, even if it might be painful. This will associated you and give you the leverage required to kick the habit. Also it will open your eyes to some habits which you might not have been aware of, that assist your existence on a daily basis.
Step 2: Write out your goals, dreams or aspirations. Then think of some people who might be already living these dreams, goals or aspirations. Think of what types of habits they might have which help them achieve these dreams of theirs. If you cant think of anybody. Write down some habits which you personally think will help you achieve those goals of yours. It could be discipline, or determination. These types of thought processes are excellent to have and are guaranteed to produce the results you wish for in your life.
Step 3: Write up a plan, some sort of strategy you are going to consistently implement which is going to reinforce your new habits and move away from your old. Remember anything you do consistently on a daily basis for approximately 10 days will rewire your nervous system, and become a habit. This is scientifically proven now. So maybe you can write up a daily list of certain things, thoughts or actions you are going to take for the next 10 days. I am not saying it’s going to be easy but none of your old habits were initially easy to be formed. You forced yourself to form them didn’t you? Maybe there was some peer incentives which help you follow through? So why don’t you tell some of your friends what you are going to do. Make it public and clear. Make sure you follow through with everything you said you were going to do.
This is a short review of certain things you can implement today, which can possibly change your life forever. But there is many things which are involved in altering habitual tendencies, so don’t stop here. Start researching on possible strategies you can form to help you again reinforce your new patterns. Remember you will either control your habits or they will control you. It’s your choice so choose well.
