Journaling is well known to have more than a few meditative effects on people keeping them. There is something about writing out your thoughts, be they good or bad, that helps.
Journaling has been around forever. It is simply the act of keeping a record of events over time. Historically, it has been a written record although some tout the use of computers for it these days. Personally, I find there is something more satisfying and peaceful about writing a journal than staring at a computer screen and typing one in. To each there own, as the saying goes.
Regardless, the beauty of journaling is the pure freedom of it. You write what you want when you want to write it. What you write is a personal decision, but you can take steps to keep it private. Most people that keep a journal do not tell others they are doing so as it is a purely private event.
The real key to journaling, however, is the simple meditative effect of doing it. There is something about putting pen to paper that helps you work through your thoughts whether they be good or bad, but especially bad. If you are stressed out, writing in your journal will reduce that stress.
The word hectic certainly has a place in modern society. For all the iPods, cell phones, instant messaging and other pieces of technology created to make our lives easier, they sure seem more crazed. Journaling, on the other hand, gives you an oasis in time. For 15 minutes or longer each day, you can turn all your devices off and just reflect.
If you don’t feel like writing, you can take the time to read back through your entries. Talk about gaining some perspective! You will always find reminders of unfinished business and events that you completely forgot about while getting through your daily life. It can be a real eye opener and a chance to learn a lot about yourself.
Should you journal? Absolutely. You can do it as often or as little as you like and it only takes a few minutes when you do it. The rewards, however, last much longer.
